LY trip report (March 7th) + wood warning
Since trip reports have been requested...
Heather and I met up at the leisurely hour of 13:30 to run the Lower Yough. By that time, it was a beautiful day - even "warm", with temps approaching the 40's. While Heather slept in, I got several hours of great skiing at 7springs on my way to Ohiopyle. We played a bit through the Loop, then sped up a bit as it got cold. I'd forgotten how much play there is on the LY @ 3.5'. Definitely glad I took my playboat =)
There were several sets of footprints at the loop takeout, as well as a tree fallen into the most convenient eddy for getting out of your boat. Throughout the doldrums, we saw plenty of downed trees on the sides of the river ... which made us a bit cautious approaching Dimple. I'm glad we scouted - there's an enormous tree that's fallen just behind dimple rock, angled downstream, which blocks the left half of the river (right across the normal raft line). I have to say - scouting the bigger rapids for wood on the LY felt really odd. Everything else - Entrance through Stairstep - was clear.
The Bruner Run takeout road is still under 12-18" of snow as of 3-7, so we decided to try the Stewarton takeout, located on river right just before Maze. Easy enough to find, but the hike out in the snow with kayaks was a bit painful.
